Ukraine's Security Service formally charged Varpakhovich on 31 August, days before the shooting, over the division's role in a Kh-101 cruise-missile strike launched from a Tu-95MS bomber that hit Kyiv's Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital in July 2024.
