Ukraine's Defense Ministry confirmed on 4 September 2026 that its Swedish-donated ASC 890 airborne early-warning aircraft has been flying combat missions over Ukraine, with the first sorties dating back to March 2026, according to UNITED24 Media and NV.ua. The ASC 890 - a Saab 340 regional airliner airframe carrying Saab's Erieye radar in a rectangular fairing above the fuselage - gives Ukraine long-range detection and tracking of aircraft and missiles that ground-based radar cannot match from an elevated, airborne position. The Defense Ministry said the aircraft, working alongside Ukraine's F-16, Mirage 2000 and Gripen fighters, forms "a modern network-centric air combat system according to NATO standards."

The delivery took nearly two years to reach combat readiness

Sweden announced the transfer of the ASC 890 aircraft in May 2024, at the time its largest single military aid package for Kyiv. Ukraine's Defense Ministry confirmed the aircraft in service in August 2025, and the first combat missions followed roughly seven months later, in March 2026 - a gap of nearly two years between the political announcement and the aircraft flying its first mission. The lag reflects the complexity of fielding a networked radar platform rather than a simple hardware handover: the ASC 890 has to integrate with Ukraine's existing fighter fleet and command-and-control systems to be useful in combat, not just fly.

The radar's value is coordinating Ukraine's mixed Western fighter fleet

Ukraine now operates F-16s, Mirage 2000s and Gripens side by side - three different Western fighter types from three different countries, each with its own radar and data-link characteristics. The ASC 890's Erieye radar is built to unify exactly that kind of mixed fleet into what the Defense Ministry calls a single network-centric system, extending detection range and improving how the fighters coordinate against Russian aircraft and missiles. An airborne early-warning platform matters most precisely when a country's combat aircraft came from three different suppliers, which is the position Ukraine's air force has been in since Western fighter deliveries began.
