Denmark and Russia give conflicting accounts of who provoked whom
Danish officials say the helicopter was operating normally when the warship fired without warning. Russia's account, relayed by its Defense Ministry per Meduza, says the Danish helicopter "was heading toward the Russian warship and did not respond to calls over an international communications channel," and that the crew fired flares "to prevent a provocation by the Danish helicopter." Russia's ambassador to Denmark, Vladimir Barbin, said Danish helicopters had previously made low passes near Russian warships, per Euronews. Neither side disputes that two flares were fired or that one passed close to the aircraft.
The vessel's identity is itself disputed
Danish accounts describe the ship only as a Russian frigate, unnamed. Russia's own Defense Ministry named it separately: days after the incident, per Meduza, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov awarded the Medal for Distinction in Combat to the commander of the corvette Soobrazitelny, describing the crew's actions as "skillful and decisive." Denmark summoned Russia's ambassador, short of invoking NATO consultations
Denmark's Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador on September 15 to demand an explanation. Bruus said Denmark was "not at that point" of pursuing Article 4 consultations with NATO allies over the incident, per Aerotime.
