Veismūnai balloon-cargo ambush, 27-28 July 2026

Acting on intelligence about balloon-borne cigarette smuggling, officers from VSAT's Criminal Investigation Department Criminal Intelligence Division, working with counterparts from the Varėna Border District's own Criminal Intelligence Division, found a large duffel bag of contraband cigarettes in a forest near Veismūnai village, Alytus district, on Monday night, 27 July 2026. Rather than seize the cargo immediately, they called in officers from VSAT's Special Purpose Division "Kovas" Eastern Section and set up an ambush near the site. About two hours later, already at first light, a Lithuanian-registered Citroën Jumper minibus arrived to collect the bundles; officers emerged from cover and detained the three men who arrived in it.

Three men from Alytus, one recently deported from Ireland - one held, two released on conditions

The three suspects - aged 24, 35, and 38 - are all residents of Alytus. One had recently been deported from Ireland and had no permanent address. All three were initially held in a Vilnius detention facility; after questioning, two were released under restrictive measures (a written pledge not to leave the country, surrendered documents, and a duty to register periodically with police), while a court ordered the third held in pretrial detention for three months - the most restrictive measure available.

Twenty-four boxes, 12,000 packs, stamped by a Grodno tobacco factory

The duffel bag held 24 cardboard boxes containing 12,000 packs of cigarettes bearing the logos of the Neman tobacco factory in Grodno, Belarus - a mix of NZ Gold and Minsk Superslims, both carrying Belarusian excise stamps not valid under Lithuanian customs law. At full Lithuanian tax liability, VSAT valued the cargo at over €65,500, one of the larger single-payload valuations recorded on the southern Lithuanian border in 2026. A pretrial investigation into smuggling and illegal possession of excise-taxable goods was opened at VSAT's Criminal Investigation Department, led by a prosecutor from the Kaunas Regional Prosecutor's Office; both charges combined carry a fine or up to eight years' imprisonment. The cigarettes and the Citroën Jumper are being held at VSAT's Vilnius Border District while the case proceeds.

A collection-point arrest, not an interception at the border itself

Unlike VSAT's drone intercepts, which stop cargo in flight near the border, this operation targeted the ground team retrieving cargo that had already been dropped and moved inland to Veismūnai - well south of the immediate Belarus border zone. The pattern echoes the Suraž balloon interception on 13 July 2026, where couriers were arrested collecting a balloon-delivered cargo rather than the balloon itself being intercepted in the air. Because the exact drop and flight-path coordinates were not published, AirVeto is not publishing a wind-drift reconstruction for this event - the location given reflects the collection point, not the crossing point.
