Masked, armed escorts pushed a group of at least 20 migrants toward Latvia's border with Belarus this week, the National Armed Forces (NBS) said on October 6. The Baltic Times put it on Monday, October 5.

On August 27 the State Border Guard chief said Belarusian border guards must have known about two tunnels on this border. On October 6, 40 days later, he said the armed escorts may be organised crime.

Armed escorts drove the group toward Latvian soldiers

NBS soldiers thwarted the crossing. The NBS said the provocation was more demonstrative and aggressive than earlier incidents, and that the escorts were armed and made threats against soldiers.

Interior Minister Jānis Dombrava said the escorts stayed on the Belarusian side, "actively pushing and guiding the group of migrants toward Latvia," Meduza reported. No official has named the border sector or the number of escorts.

Hours later, masked men crossed into Latvia and took two cameras

Hours after the push, masked individuals entered Latvian territory, Dombrava said. They damaged an electricity distribution box, took surveillance cameras, and returned to Belarus before a border guard unit could arrive.

State Border Guard chief Guntis Pujāts told the LETA news agency that two border surveillance cameras were stolen. He said the necessary steps to restore the damaged infrastructure were already being taken.

The border guard chief and the interior minister read the masked men differently

Dombrava warned that "Belarus should understand that such incidents could lead to more serious consequences for Belarus itself." The NBS called the push a deliberate provocation and a hybrid threat, with migration used as a tool of pressure on Latvia, the EU and NATO.

Pujāts suggested the masked individuals might not be Belarusian state representatives, but members of organised crime who exploit the goodwill of the Belarusian authorities to move migrants. He said sabotage against information technology infrastructure is more frequent than before, while the fence is damaged about half as often as a year ago.

That differs in emphasis from his August 27 reading of the tunnels. Both of Latvia's tunnels, the first of them the Skrudaliena tunnel, were "undoubtedly" dug with the Belarusian authorities' knowledge, he told Latvian Radio. Pujāts agreed with the NBS on October 6 that tensions remain high.

Latvia is stopping about 43 people a day this year, up from 33 in 2025

The State Border Guard has prevented 11,925 illegal crossings from Belarus in 2026, LSM English reported. That is 99% of the 12,046 it prevented in all of 2025.

AirVeto divided each year's total by the days in it, counting 279 days for 2026 through October 6. The 2026 pace is 29% above 2025 and 2.9 times 2024. The comparison sets a nine-month rate against full-year rates, so seasonal swings are not removed.

Year Prevented crossings Per day
2024 5,388 14.7
2025 12,046 33.0
2026 (to October 6) 11,925 42.7

On Monday alone the Border Guard prevented 59 people from crossing. The Baltic Times reported that border guards turned away 21 more on Tuesday.

Wind over the Latvian border zone

At 00:00 local time on October 5, the start of the day the sources allow, the wind at 3,000 m blew from the WNW at 38 km/h. At 2,000 m it came from the WNW at 36 km/h. No source gives the hour of the push, so this is the wind at the start of that day, not at the moment of the event.

Lithuania says it is ready and has not seen armed escorts

Lithuanian Interior Minister Martynas Katelynas said on October 7 that the incident "is an additional escalation that raises concerns it could also happen at our borders." Lithuania has not yet had a similar case, he said, and is prepared to repel any attempt by armed escorts to enter from Belarus.

Lithuania has drafted rules giving border officers more options to use weapons. Katelynas also said decisions must aim at de-escalation, with officers choosing specific actions in each situation.

The push came in the last days of Latvia's national defence exercise

The NBS exercise Namejs 2026 began on September 2 and runs until October 8, LSM reported, so the push fell in its final week. Latvia has extended its enhanced border security regime in Ludza, Krāslava, Augšdaugava, Daugavpils and Kaunata Parish to the end of this year. AirVeto's Namejs brief covers the exercise.

This reconstruction is based on reporting by LSM, Meduza and the Baltic Times, and AirVeto's wind-model data. The method is on the methodology page, and every reconstructed event sits in the incident archive.
