Two contraband balloons hit power lines in Lithuania's Kėdainiai and Kaišiadorys districts on October 21, 2026, and burned; police found close to 20,000 packs of cigarettes.

AirVeto finding: Padotnuvys lies 138 km from the Belarus border, deeper inland than any Lithuanian balloon pin in AirVeto's archive except the Šventoji coast, and the 3,000 m wind that morning covered the 154 km upwind path from the border in about three hours.

The first balloon exploded on a village street in Kėdainiai District at dawn

The Kaunas fire and rescue board took the first call at 06:04, Kėdainių mugė reported. A caller said something was burning on Draugystės street in Padotnuvys village, in Dotnuva eldership, and thought a street lamp might have exploded. Firefighters found that a smuggling balloon had hit the power lines and burst. Its torn envelope was burning by the roadside.

Kaunas county police officers who came to the scene found ten rope-tied packages on the roadway, LRT and Kėdainių mugė reported. They held about 15,000 packs of what police suspect are smuggled cigarettes. Delfi, citing the police, puts that find at about 06:09 in Siponiai village, also in Dotnuva eldership. The material went to the State Border Guard Service (VSAT).

Dotnuva's elder, Modestas Tvaravičius, told the local paper Rinkos aikštė that nothing like it had happened in the eldership before, LRT reported.

The second balloon hit power lines and caught fire in Kaišiadorys District that night

At 23:04 a resident on Vėjo street in Šakniai village reported an explosion and something burning in the fields. Delfi and TV3 carried the fire service's account. Firefighters found a balloon with smuggled cigarettes caught on the power lines and on fire. They put the fire out.

About 4,900 packs were recovered at Šakniai, Delfi reported. They carried Belarusian excise stamps. Together the two cargoes come to close to 20,000 packs. Police passed both cases to VSAT, to be joined to the service's own investigations.

The wind came from Belarus at every height, around the clock, at both villages

At 05:00 local time, an hour before the Padotnuvys call, the wind at 3,000 m blew from the SSE at 53 km/h. At 2,000 m it came from the SSE at 47 km/h. Near the ground, at 80 m, it came from the ESE at 24 km/h.

Over Šakniai at 23:00 local time, the wind at 3,000 m came from the SSE at 45 km/h. At 2,000 m it came from the SSE at 48 km/h. At 80 m it came from the ESE at 29 km/h.

AirVeto traced a straight line upwind from both villages for every hour from 23:00 on October 20 to 05:00 on October 22. It did so at eight heights between 80 m and 7,000 m. Every one of those lines left Lithuania across the Belarus border. Method.

This reconstruction is based on reporting by LRT, Delfi, Kėdainių mugė, TV3, 15min and UA.NEWS, and AirVeto's wind-model data (DWD ICON-EU via Open-Meteo) for the event window.

Padotnuvys sits about three hours of drift from the border

By AirVeto's measurement, Padotnuvys is 138 km from the nearest point of the Belarus border. Šakniai is 83 km from it.

The upwind line from Padotnuvys at 3,000 m runs 154 km to the border. At 53 km/h that is about three hours, so a balloon at that height would have crossed the border around 03:00 local time. The Šakniai line runs 85 km, about two hours at that evening's 45 km/h.

The straight line is a minimum. Balloon altitude was not reported, and the wind turns with height and time along the way.

Lithuania's armed forces tied the night's explosion sounds to the balloons

On the evening of October 21, residents of Kaunas-area villages such as Rokai, Vaišvydava, Gervėnupis and Laumėnai reported a loud bang, a brief power cut and shaking windows. A 15min reader in Laumėnai put it at 21:53 to 21:55. Kaunas county police logged a resident's report of a flash and a possible explosion at about 21:59, and a patrol found nothing suspicious.

The Lithuanian Armed Forces told TV3 the explosion-like sound was heard because of the two balloons. Its statement cited the fire service's report of the Kėdainiai and Kaišiadorys cases. Two army Black Hawk helicopters were also flying planned night training that evening, 15min reported. They flew from 21:10 to 00:50 over the Rokai and Kazlų Rūda training areas.

The times in the public record don't line up neatly. Residents and police put the bang between about 21:35 and 21:59, TV3 and 15min reported. The fire service got the Šakniai call at 23:04. Padotnuvys had burned about 16 hours before the bang.

Residents of Gervėnupis and Vaišvydava were among those who heard the bang. By AirVeto's measurement, Šakniai is about 21 km from Gervėnupis and 27 km from Vaišvydava.

Only one Lithuanian balloon in AirVeto's archive came down deeper inland

AirVeto has reconstructed 14 Lithuanian balloon incidents in 2026, this one included. Only the Šventoji coast landing in January lies farther from Belarus than Padotnuvys. Eleven of the 14 pins sit within 50 km of the border. The Kaunas Šančiai balloon of May 13 came down about 99 km from it.

On October 8, VSAT seized nine balloon cargoes in four districts, including three in Kaišiadorys District and one in Panevėžys District. By AirVeto's measurement on that page, the Panevėžys district seat is 127 km from the border. The wider picture is on the Lithuania smuggling balloons page.
