Šumskas balloon, Oct 30 - 3,000 packs of cigarettes
Border guards found a balloon with 3,000 packs of Belarusian cigarettes near Šumskas, Vilnius District, and detained two local men who came to collect it, VSAT said on October 30, 2026.
AirVeto finding: Šumskas is 0.9 km from the Belarus border, but for the 26 hours before VSAT's announcement the 3,000 m wind blew from the south-west to the west-north-west, from Lithuania toward the border, so no line traced upwind at that height reaches Belarus within 20 km.

Lithuania's State Border Guard Service (VSAT) said on October 30, 2026 that guards found a balloon with 3,000 packs of Belarusian cigarettes near Šumskas. Šumskas lies 0.9 km from the Belarus border, by AirVeto's measurement. Yet for the 26 hours before the announcement the 3,000 m wind blew from the south-west to the west-north-west, from Lithuania toward the border. No line traced upwind at that height reaches Belarus within 20 km.
Border guards found the balloon near Šumskas and detained two local men
VSAT said its officers found a balloon carrying cargo near Šumskas, a small town in Vilnius District 31 km east-south-east of Vilnius. The cargo was 3,000 packs of Belarusian cigarettes worth more than 16,500 euros. Two local residents who had come to pick up the cigarettes were detained. The 15min news site repeated the account in a report on balloon cargoes.
The 3,000 m wind did not blow from the nearby border
The announcement does not say when the balloon came down or how high it flew. AirVeto therefore looked at the 26 hours before it, from 12:00 local time on October 29 to 13:00 on October 30.
At 12:00 on October 29 the wind at 3,000 m blew from the SW at 14 km/h. At 2,000 m it came from the SSW at 15 km/h. By 13:00 on October 30 the 3,000 m wind blew from the WNW at 28 km/h. Through all 26 hours the 3,000 m wind came from between the SW and the WNW, at 14 to 35 km/h.
AirVeto traced a straight line upwind from Šumskas for each of those hours at 3,000 m. None reaches the Belarus border within 20 km. The nearest crossing is 70 km away, far to the south-west. Method.
Higher up the picture changes. AirVeto also traced one line per hour at every height from 500 to 7,000 m, 182 lines in all. Twelve of them reach the border within 20 km. One is at 2,000 m, at noon on October 29. Eleven are at 5,000 or 7,000 m, between 15:00 and 23:00 local time that day. Each of those lines is 8 to 18 km long, 12 to 72 minutes of drift at the wind's speed.
These are straight-line minimums at fixed heights. They show what the wind allows, not the balloon's path. This reconstruction is based on reporting by VSAT and 15min and AirVeto's wind-model data (DWD ICON-EU via Open-Meteo) for the window.
On October 24 VSAT followed balloons 33 km straight downwind from the border
On October 24 guards saw linked balloons at Gerdašiai, 0.4 km from the border. They followed them to Juozapavičiai, 33 km north, in a wind from the south (Juozapavičiai balloons). At Šumskas the pin sits at the border and the wind runs along it. Vilnius Airport's September 22 balloon closure is 29 km west of Šumskas. The wider picture is on the Lithuania smuggling balloons page.
