Two Geran drones shot down off Sulina, Romania, 17 Oct 2026
Romanian F-16s shot down two jet-powered Geran-family drones in Romanian territorial waters off Sulina at 18:01 and 18:05 local time on October 17, 2026, the defence ministry said.

Romanian F-16s shot down two jet-powered Geran-family drones in Romanian territorial waters off Sulina at 18:01 and 18:05 local time on October 17, 2026, the defence ministry said. Its final release gives the second drone five minutes inside Romanian airspace, but its own times, entry at 18:01 and shoot-down at 18:05, make it four.
The first drone entered at 17:59 and was down two minutes later.
The ministry's own times give the second drone four minutes, not five
Two F-16s from Borcea took off at 17:43, after radar picked up a group of targets about 120 km east of Snake Island heading southwest. The earlier release gives these times:
- 17:59: the first target entered Romanian airspace.
- 18:01: one F-16 shot it down; the final release places this southeast of Sulina.
- 18:01: the second target entered Romanian airspace.
- 18:05: the other F-16 shot it down, east of Sulina.
The final release says the second drone "evolved five minutes" in national airspace. 18:05 minus 18:01 is four. TRT World and LRT also report five.
Both kills were Romanian, over Romanian waters, unlike the October 14 shoot-downs
The ministry says both drones were identified as Geran-family drones with jet propulsion and were shot down over Romania's territorial waters. Miruța put the kills about 20 km southeast of Sulina, TRT World reported.
On October 14 the two kills the ministry reported were by Ukrainian air defence, after the targets had left Romanian airspace. On July 26 a Romanian F-16 shot down a drone 12 km northeast of Sulina.
A week of alerts preceded the shoot-downs
The ministry's final release says radar saw targets in Ukrainian airspace near the border in eight separate situations in the preceding week. In four of them, unmanned aircraft briefly entered Romanian airspace. Drones also hit commercial ships in the Black Sea, some of them in Romanian territorial waters.
Earlier on October 17 a separate target was detected over Ukraine north of Plauru, in Tulcea County, and Spanish F-18s were lifted from Mihail Kogălniceanu. An RO-Alert went out at 01:54 and the alert ended at 02:30, with no entry into Romanian airspace reported. A possible drone fell near Plauru on October 2.
The wind at 3,000 m over Sulina blew from the south at 21 km/h
AirVeto's wind model gives the center-point wind over Sulina at 18:00 local time on October 17.
| Altitude | Wind from | Speed |
|---|---|---|
| 2,000 m | SSE | 10 km/h |
| 3,000 m | S | 21 km/h |
Directions are where the wind blew from. The ministry said the group was heading southwest when radar first picked it up,.
AirVeto's archive holds more pages near the town, including the July 2026 Danube Delta drone series.
This reconstruction is based on the Romanian Ministry of National Defence's press releases, TRT World, LRT and AirVeto's wind-model data for the event window. How the model is built is on the methodology page. Every drone and airspace event AirVeto has reconstructed along the EU's eastern border is in the incident archive.
