Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told an emergency government meeting that "all indications suggest it was a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile"; Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated on X that a Russian Kh-101 had "crossed into Poland as part of Russia's massive strike against Ukraine, violating NATO airspace." Polish military tracked the object for six minutes before radar contact was lost
Poland's Operational Command reported detection at 3:40 AM local time (01:40 UTC): an unidentified object moving westward in Polish airspace, while "at least a dozen" Russian missiles were operating over western Ukraine simultaneously. A Polish Air Force F-16 was dispatched to identify and intercept. Six minutes after the initial radar return, the signal disappeared. A Mi-24 helicopter was then sent to the last known position, locating the probable impact site in an uninhabited area near Tarnawa-Kolonia.
Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz called it "an extremely tough night" for Polish air-defence and threat-detection systems. Air-raid sirens sounded across the Lublin region as the investigation began. Bomb-disposal teams deployed to the site confirmed a crater and scattered debris from an unidentified object in a field approximately 2 km from the nearest residential buildings. A government source told the Polish outlet Wirtualna Polska, as reported by Ukrainska Pravda: "Everything points to it being a Russian missile."
Crater in a Lublin field: 10 metres wide, 2 km from the nearest homes
Local residents in the Bilgoraj County area reported an explosion unlike anything they had previously heard. "We've lived here all our lives and have never heard anything like it. The windows were almost blown out," one resident told local outlet Lublin 112, as cited by APA. Officers from the Lublin regional police found "a crater in a field around 2 kilometres from the nearest buildings, along with scattered fragments of an unidentified object," according to the official police statement.
Tusk confirmed the airspace violation in a post to X and announced a special coordination team. The Prime Minister was travelling to the site by morning of 30 July. Investigations by bomb-disposal experts were ongoing at time of writing, and Polish authorities had not formally confirmed the type of object.
Warsaw and Kyiv both point to Kh-101
Tusk told an emergency government session: "All indications suggest that it was a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile. We were prepared to shoot down the missile if it had continued its flight," according to CNN. The Polish government source quoted by Wirtualna Polska said "everything points to it being a Russian missile," while bomb-disposal teams continued their examination.
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Sybiha was more direct. "Overnight, a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile crossed into Poland as part of Russia's massive strike against Ukraine, violating NATO airspace," Sybiha wrote on X, as cited by Reuters. "Putin's terror clearly demonstrates that the need to strengthen ballistic protection for Ukraine and all of Europe is urgent." NATO commanders were kept informed, Tusk said. Poland has not yet issued a formal, forensically confirmed identification of the debris at time of writing.
Seventy Russian missiles and 284 Shahed drones struck Ukraine in the same window
The Tarnawa-Kolonia impact occurred during one of Russia's largest overnight strikes on Ukraine in recent weeks. Ukraine's Air Force reported 74 cruise, ballistic, and hypersonic missiles plus 284 Shahed-type drones launched in the early hours of 30 July. Ukrainian intercept units downed more than 260 drones and 55 missiles; 11 missiles and 17 drones reached their targets across 20 locations, according to preliminary data cited by ABC News.
At least eight people were killed in Ukraine overnight. A ballistic missile destroyed a family home near the southern Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih, killing three children aged 5 and 12 among the dead, per CNN and the Kyiv Independent. Strikes damaged residential buildings in Lviv, injuring more than 20 people, and hit the Poltava region and Kyiv. President Volodymyr Zelensky, returning from a White House meeting on additional air-defence systems, had stopped in Lublin the previous day to meet Tusk on the same Lublin-Lviv route that a Russian missile would cross the following night.
The deepest Russian-hardware impact in NATO territory on record
The Tarnawa-Kolonia impact marks a distinct step beyond prior incidents in this border zone. In November 2022, two civilians were killed near the village of Przewodow in Lublin Voivodeship, approximately 6 km inside Poland, by a missile Polish and NATO investigators later determined was a stray Ukrainian air-defence round, not Russian hardware. In August 2025, a Russian Shahed drone flew undetected over Poland for 2.5 hours before crashing near Osiny in Lublin Voivodeship without detonating. In September 2025, NATO jets intercepted and shot down 19 Russian drones that entered Polish airspace during a mass strike on Ukraine.
Tarnawa-Kolonia differs from all three: it is the first confirmed Russian-origin munition to penetrate approximately 90 km into NATO territory and detonate, with no intercept and no casualties. Przewodow was 6 km inside the border and was not Russian hardware. The September 2025 drones were intercepted before impact. The Osiny Shahed crashed without detonating. The Tarnawa-Kolonia crater is the first deep-penetration detonation on record from a confirmed Russian munition inside NATO territory.
