Acting on intelligence about balloon-borne cigarette smuggling, VSAT Criminal Investigation Department officers, working with the Varėna Border Post, found a large duffel bag of contraband cigarettes in a forest near Veismūnai village, Alytus district, before dawn. Officers set up an ambush at the site rather than seize the cargo immediately. At dawn on Thursday 30 July 2026, a Citroën Jumper minibus arrived at the forest; officers detained the three men who came to collect the cargo.

The three suspects - aged 24, 35, and 38 - are all residents of Alytus. One had recently been deported from Ireland and had no permanent address. All three were taken into custody in Vilnius.
Twenty-four boxes, 12,000 packs, stamped by a Grodno tobacco factory
The duffel bag held 24 cardboard boxes containing 12,000 packs of cigarettes bearing the logos of the Neman tobacco factory in Grodno, Belarus - a mix of NZ Gold and Minsk Superslims, both carrying Belarusian excise stamps not valid under Lithuanian customs law. At full Lithuanian tax liability, VSAT valued the cargo at over €65,500, one of the larger single-payload valuations recorded on the southern Lithuanian border in 2026.
A collection-point arrest, not an interception at the border itself
Unlike VSAT's drone intercepts, which stop cargo in flight near the border, this operation targeted the ground team retrieving cargo that had already been dropped and moved inland to Veismūnai - well south of the immediate Belarus border zone. The pattern echoes the Suraž balloon interception on 13 July 2026, where couriers were arrested collecting a balloon-delivered cargo rather than the balloon itself being intercepted in the air.
