Just after midnight on Sunday 6 September 2026 (21:00 UTC, 5 September), officers from the Purvėnai Border Post of the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service (VSAT) were patrolling the border strip near Daugidonys village, Šalčininkai district, when they heard sounds consistent with a drone crossing from the Belarusian side, according to VSAT's press release of 7 September 2026. Anti-drone equipment was deployed immediately, and within minutes officers located a homemade fixed-wing aircraft in the likely fall zone near the village. Strapped to it: two cardboard boxes bearing the logos of the Neman tobacco factory in Grodno, Belarus, holding 1,000 packs of NZ Gold cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps, valued at €5,510 under Lithuanian tax liability. The interception is the 55th drone brought down by VSAT on the Lithuania-Belarus border in just over eight months of 2026. Anti-drone equipment brought the aircraft down within minutes of the first sound
Officers from the Purvėnai Border Post, part of VSAT's Varėna Border District, were scanning the border strip near Daugidonys when they picked up the acoustic signature of a drone approaching from Belarus. They used their anti-drone equipment toward the sound without delay.
A search of the likely fall zone in the Daugidonys area turned up a homemade fixed-wing aircraft within a few minutes. VSAT's release does not describe the airframe's dimensions, unlike some prior recoveries on this border segment, and does not state that anyone was detained over the incident.
A bundle wrapped in transparent polyethylene film was fastened to the drone. Inside were two cardboard boxes carrying the branding of the Neman tobacco factory in Grodno, Belarus.
The cargo was 1,000 packs of NZ Gold cigarettes worth €5,510
The boxes held 1,000 packs of NZ Gold cigarettes bearing Belarusian excise stamps, which Lithuanian customs law does not recognize. VSAT put the value at €5,510, all Lithuanian taxes included.
Administrative proceedings were opened at the Purvėnai Border Post for violations of the rules governing the acquisition and transport of excise goods. Both the drone and the cigarettes are held at the post.
NZ Gold has turned up repeatedly on the southern Lithuanian border this year, including the Tausiūnai interception on 26 July, also handled by the Purvėnai post, also in Šalčininkai district.
The 55th interception of 2026 is running far ahead of the pace VSAT reported in July
VSAT's own count puts this at the 55th drone brought down on the Belarus border in just over eight months of 2026, already one more than the 54 intercepted across the whole of 2024. Full-year 2025 came to 59.
At the Tausiūnai interception on 26 July, VSAT had logged 35 drones in under seven months, a pace of roughly five a month. The 20 interceptions VSAT has added since then, in the six weeks to 6 September, work out to close to fourteen a month, nearly three times the earlier rate.
Šalčininkai district specifically has repeated as a site of these intercepts: besides Tausiūnai, another drone was brought down here on 7 May, the 17th of the year. The neighbouring Vilnius district has its own cluster, including a drone near Kenas on 18 July.
At 21:00 UTC on 5 September, during the intercept window, the 500 m layer over the southern Lithuanian border showed W wind at 51.1 km/h. At 2,000 m the wind held WNW at 55.7 km/h; at 3,000 m WNW at 55.8 km/h. Strong, near-uniform wind pushing east through the column was the atmospheric background for this intercept.
