Three Russian drones hit the Starokozache-Tudora border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova between 23:35 and 00:05 local time (20:35-21:05 UTC), overnight on September 8-9, 2026, Ukraine's State Emergency Service and the Odesa Regional Military Administration said. One drone struck the crossing directly; the other two fell on Ukrainian territory nearby. Two civilians were killed and three wounded, Odesa Governor Oleh Kiper reported, at a checkpoint that sits about 1 km from Moldovan territory and normally clears thousands of people and hundreds of vehicles a day.
The crossing burned and closed
The strike destroyed part of the checkpoint's infrastructure and set a large fire that spread to buses, trucks, and passenger cars waiting to cross. Sixteen people at the site were evacuated to temporary accommodation. Ukraine's border guard service suspended all passenger and vehicle traffic through Starokozache afterward. Moldova's Border Police, on the other side of the same crossing, confirmed the closure; the citizenship of the wounded was still being established.
A wider strike wave, one civilian border crossing among the targets
The Starokozache strike was one part of a larger overnight bombardment: Ukraine's Air Force reported hundreds of Russian drones launched nationwide, with strikes that night also killing civilians in Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, and Donetsk regions. A Ukrainian border guard spokesperson told reporters Russia's likely aim at Starokozache specifically was to disrupt logistics routes rather than to hit a military target.
A civilian border crossing, not the first drone to reach this stretch
Starokozache is the same general border segment where AirVeto reconstructed the Palanca crossing on 26 August and the Kopanka crash on 13 July - both drone events that reached Moldovan territory without killing anyone. This is the first of the three to leave confirmed civilian deaths, and the first on the Ukrainian side of the crossing rather than the Moldovan side. Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan said 17 drones entered Moldovan airspace in August alone, calling the pattern "clearly an extremely worrying development."
Wind conditions over the Odesa border segment
At 21:00 UTC on September 8, close to the strike window, the 1,000 m layer over the crossing showed a weak flow pushing toward the ENE at 5.8 km/h. At 2,000 m the flow was stronger, pushing toward the SSW at 12.8 km/h; at 3,000 m it pushed almost due south at 21.8 km/h.
