Officers of Latvia's State Border Guard found a drone hidden in forest in Demene Parish, Augšdaugava Municipality, during a routine border-zone patrol on Sunday, 30 August 2026, according to the agency's own 31 August statement. A rectangular box wrapped in white polyethylene film was strapped to the drone's underside. Inside were 15,000 "NZ Gold" cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps. The smugglers had not yet returned to collect the shipment when officers found it. Latvian prosecutors opened a criminal case under Section 190, Part 1 of the Criminal Law, for smuggling in a significant amount.
A multirotor drone carried the load, not the fixed-wing type common on the Lithuanian border
The recovered aircraft is a multirotor, not the small fixed-wing craft that has carried most cigarette loads across the Lithuania-Belarus border this year. Border Guard senior specialist Jolanta Babiško, of the agency's Strategic Development and Public Relations Division, confirmed the seizure but did not disclose the drone's exact model or flight origin. The cargo box was fixed to the underside with polyethylene wrap, the same packaging method used on cross-border drone runs further south in Lithuania.
The load was nearly four times the size of a comparable Lithuanian intercept a month earlier
At 15,000 individual cigarettes, the Demene shipment runs to roughly 750 packs, against the 200 packs (€1,092 under Lithuanian excise) VSAT recovered from a downed fixed-wing drone near Tausiūnai, Šalčininkai district, on the Lithuania-Belarus border on 26 July 2026. Both shipments carried the same "NZ Gold" brand with Belarusian excise stamps, a brand that has turned up repeatedly on drone and balloon runs across both the Latvian and Lithuanian sides of the border this year.
The Demene find sits roughly 12 km west of, and 20 days after, the Skrudaliena tunnel, discovered in the same Augšdaugava Municipality on 10 August 2026: two different smuggling methods, tunnel and drone, on the same short stretch of border within three weeks.
Wind over Demene Parish
At 00:00 UTC on 30 August, the 500 m layer over Demene Parish showed SW wind at 34.5 km/h. At 2,000 m the wind shifted to WSW at 26.2 km/h; at 3,000 m it held WSW at 32.5 km/h. This reconstruction is based on the State Border Guard's own statement, corroborated by REFORM.news and 1188.lv (LETA), and on AirVeto's wind-model data for 30 August 2026. Because the drone was already on the ground in forest cover when found, with no reported flight time or route, these figures describe the regional airflow that day rather than a release-point or drift-path calculation for the aircraft itself.
