Moldova's defence ministry tracked a drone entering from Ukraine's Vinnytsia region at 13:59 local time on October 23, 2026. Police later found a drone in a field at Chiștelnița, about 100 m from a home. AirVeto measures the ministry's last radar point 10.8 km from that field, and its final two points imply a pace above 454 km/h.

President Maia Sandu called the aircraft a Russian Geran strike drone, MOLDPRES reported. Moldova declared a Russian embassy employee persona non grata that evening.

The drone crossed from Ukraine at 13:59 and left radar at 14:12

The ministry's Air Operations Centre logged an unauthorised flight at 13:59. The aircraft entered from the direction of Verhnia Slobidka in Vinnytsia region and headed for Frunzeuca, in Camenca District, in the Transnistrian segment. At 14:10 it vanished from monitoring near Pepeni, in Sîngerei District.

The ministry then said the drone had reappeared briefly. At 14:12 it vanished again, this time near Meșeni, in Rezina District.

Police found a drone in a field about 100 m from a house

A local resident called police about a drone on the ground at Chiștelnița, in Telenești District, TVR Moldova reported. Officers cordoned off the area and police said no victims had been reported. Ziare.com added that explosives specialists were sent to examine the drone.

NewsMaker's Russian-language service published its first report on the find at 16:08 local time, about two hours after the last radar point. TVR Moldova put Chiștelnița 64 km from Chișinău in a straight line, and AirVeto's measurement agrees at 63.9 km.

Sandu wrote on X that the drone fell "near family homes and an energy facility", UNN reported. Ziare.com said the wreckage in the police photo looked like a Geran-4, a turbojet model, but noted that the authorities had not confirmed the type.

The last radar point is 10.8 km from the field, and the drone was fast

Meșeni, where the ministry lost the track at 14:12, lies 10.8 km from Chiștelnița, by AirVeto's measurement. The ministry's own release treats the two as one incident: after the 14:12 point, it says, a resident reported an aircraft near their home at Chiștelnița. It does not name the drone's variant, altitude or launch point.

The two final radar points give a pace. Pepeni and Meșeni are 22.7 km apart in a straight line. The ministry stamps its times to the minute, so 14:10 and 14:12 leave less than three minutes between them, and the drone flew faster than 454 km/h on that leg. The drone reappeared in between, so the real path was at least that long.

Ziare.com gives the Geran-4's top speed as up to 500 km/h. The pace sits close to that figure, which fits a jet-powered aircraft. On September 30, the ministry's two points for a second drone implied at least 232 km/h, and Defence Minister Anatolie Nosatîi cited 400 km/h.

Moldova expelled a Russian embassy employee the same evening

The foreign ministry called the incident a serious violation of Moldova's sovereignty and security and a direct threat to citizens, TVR Moldova reported. It declared an employee of Russia's embassy in Chișinău persona non grata. Jurnal.md noted that the ministry did not name the person.

Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi asked Moscow to stop actions that threaten regional security. Ukraine's foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, posted that Ukraine stood in full solidarity with Moldova, Jurnal.md reported.

It is the 65th violation this year by the ministry's count

The ministry's tally stood at 63 violations in 2026, 15 of them in October, and 100 since 2022 when Digi24 quoted it earlier on October 23. The ministry's own release that day reads 65 in 2026, 17 in October and 102 since 2022. It lists two cases since October 16, Codrenii Noi and Chiștelnița, and both ended with a drone on the ground.

This is the tenth Moldova page in AirVeto's 2026 archive. The nearest earlier one is Brănești, 35 km from Chiștelnița, where a Geran-4 exploded beside the G72 road. A week earlier, a drone exploded at Codrenii Noi in Dondușeni District.

Wind over Telenești District was light at 1,000 m and blew from the southeast aloft

At 14:00 local time on October 23, the wind at 1,000 m blew from the E at 7 km/h. At 2,000 m it came from the SE at 26 km/h. At 3,000 m it also came from the SE, at 25 km/h.

The drone's altitude is not reported. The hourly table under the map shows how the wind changed through the afternoon.

This reconstruction is based on the Moldovan defence ministry's releases, Moldovan and Ukrainian reporting, and AirVeto's wind-model data for the event window. How the model is built and where it is reliable is on the methodology page.
