Vilnius yellow air alert, 3 Oct 2026
Lithuania issued a yellow-level air alert for Vilnius County and Ukmergė over a possible drone on the morning of October 3, 2026; NATO fighters were scrambled. The all-clear came at 10:35 local time.

Lithuania's Armed Forces issued a yellow-level air alert ("TIKĖTINAS ORO PAVOJUS", geltona) for Vilnius County and Ukmergė on the morning of October 3, 2026, over a possible drone, 15min reported. The all-clear (white) came at 10:35 local time, and the object has not been identified. AirVeto's wind model puts the air over Vilnius at 1,000 m moving from the WSW at 13 km/h at 09:00 local time.
The alert told residents to find a safe place and wait
The message, sent in Lithuanian and English, opens "The Lithuanian Armed Forces inform: POSSIBLE AIR RAID ALERT (YELLOW)." It tells people to know their safe places. It says to keep away from any suspicious object and call 112. It ends with "Wait for the all-clear" and points to the preparedness site lt72.lt for recommendations.
Yellow is the middle tier of Lithuania's three-level system. It means a possible threat is being monitored, not that a dangerous object is confirmed inside Lithuanian airspace.
NATO fighters were scrambled and Vilnius Airport airspace was closed
15min reported that NATO fighters were sent into the air and that the controlled airspace of Vilnius Airport was temporarily closed because of unidentified flying objects. The National Crisis Management Centre (NKVC) said the drone possibly came in from the Belarus side.
NKVC head Vilmantas Vitkauskas told LRT Radio the object was not yet fully identified. He said residents were reporting an object moving beyond Vilnius toward Jonava, but that this was not confirmed and was not radar data from the air defence mission. He said the object's movement may be westward, so the alert could also be extended to Kaunas County and Jonava District.
Vitkauskas said the object was moving slower than usual, so it could also be a flock of birds. He said that without visual contact with the object, no one can say what it is, and that scrambling fighters is standard procedure. Airport airspace normally reopens within minutes, he said.
Rail traffic was not halted, a spokesperson for rail operator LTG told BNS, and the retailer Maxima paused store and warehouse operations in the alert counties.
The all-clear came at 10:35 local time
The Armed Forces cell-broadcast "ORO PAVOJAUS NĖRA (BALTA)", or "AIR ALERT IS OVER (WHITE)", reached phones in Vilnius at 10:35 local time on October 3. It says the alert is cancelled and people can resume normal activities. White is the lowest tier of the system, the one that follows an alert.

The cause of the alert has not been officially stated at time of writing. NKVC head Vitkauskas had said earlier that the object could be a flock of birds.
This is the third Vilnius yellow alert AirVeto has reconstructed since September 13
The September 13 alert covered Vilnius, Elektrėnai and Trakai and ended 29 minutes later, with NATO jets identifying the radar mark as a bird flock. The September 15 alert ended with NATO fighters shooting down a drone near Pratkūnai, in Kaišiadorys District. An earlier Vilnius alert on June 13 followed a balloon drifting in from Belarus.
The outcomes of those three alerts differ, so the alert level alone says little about what triggered this one. Lithuania's wider drone and balloon record is on the Lithuania drone incidents page.
Wind conditions over Vilnius
At 09:00 local time on October 3, the wind at 1,000 m over Vilnius came from the WSW at 13 km/h. At 2,000 m it came from the WNW at 15 km/h. At 3,000 m it also came from the WNW, at 18 km/h.
This reconstruction is based on the Lithuanian Armed Forces' cell-broadcast via LT72, 15min's reporting and AirVeto's wind-model data for the alert window. The method is on the methodology page.
